Blockout Exercises

 project objective

For the exercises below, I've tried different techniques of making blockouts based on reference. The goal was always to create spaces with the right scale, metrics, and with a varied look whilst being built in effective ways: with just a few building blocks used in different ways.

 Re-creation from reference 1

About this project

  • Exercise on deconstructing and reconstructing from reference

  • Built a levelkit with a few standardized blocks based on photograph

  • Rebuilt the street using only the levelkit

  • Focus on getting metrics and composition right

 Re-creation from reference 2

About this project

  • The reference image is a photograph I took of Dublin Castle in 2020

  • The paint-over identifies repeating elements of the structure

  • These repeated elements were re-created in UE4 and metrics were tested to ensure the scale was accurate

  • With this levelkit, recreating the original shape was very easy

'Painting with shapes' exercise

About this project

  • This is the result of an exercise by CGMA's Level Design For Games

  • Note that I have not taken or completed this course, I was just inspired by others

  • Only used a few basic shapes to create a landscape based on a reference image for inspiration

  • Only 4 shapes were used. By rotating and tilting the meshes, a varied landscape was created

  • Focus on composition and making the space look varied
